A true bird of prey | The Epic Hawk Bow review

Updated: Jul 18, 2020

Lately, I’ve been really amazed at the level of quality I’ve been seeing in hunting recurves. Even ones in the “budget” range. In some ways, they blow me away more than modern ILF bows. The price of admission for ILF Bows is significantly higher than bolt on/take down beginner bows. When I see the level of quality on some of these entry level hunting bows, I sometimes can’t help but be amazed. The Epic Hawk is one of those bows.

The Epic Hawk from Korean brand Cartel is a traditional style bolt on/take down bow. This means the limbs must be bolted or screwed on for use. The riser is a combination of laminated Diamond Wood and Hard maple. The limbs are wood and black fiberglass laminate. This bow is a looker. The riser’s wood layers are beautifully combined making it look classy and premium. With its black limbs…. 1000 points added to looks!

The bow has standard mountings for a front stabilizer and sights or bow quiver. It also has a single Burger hole for a screw in rest or plunger button. The shelf itself is curved which allows shooting without an elevated rest. The limb pockets are metal re-enforced. The bolts connecting the limbs require the use of a hex wrench. Some might find this inconvenient. I personally like it since it makes the bolt more flush with the rest of the bow.

This 62 inch recurve is light weight and easy to carry around. It is smooth at initial draw and stacks quite evenly beyond 28 inches. For a bow at this price, the limbs feel quite stable and side to side movements are very controlled. When drawing back the bow, there is a noticeable absence of squeaks and cricking sounds common in less expensive bows. The shots actually feel reassuring and confident. The riser feels rigid and strong. Vibrations post shot are quite subdued. The Hawk is also a very quiet bow. One of those bows where hitting the target is louder than the bow itself. The bow is a joy to shoot.

I can honestly say I can’t find many faults on this bow. The only thing I do not like about the Hawk is the height of the grip. Do note that this is personal preference, but the grip is way too low for me. Which is a pity because otherwise, the grip is comfortable. It has just the right thickness and fits well in the hand. I find the height too low such that it felt like I was pushing on a vertical pole. I don’t feel that the grip is conducive developing the proper grip on the bow.

The Epic Hawk is one awesome bow. Specially when you consider the price. The fit and finish is incredible. It looks and feels like a million bucks. I can imagine how fun it would be carrying the Hawk around a 3D course shooting foam animals. The combination of patterns and colors are absolutely beautiful. The bow is super quiet to a point where silencers and dampers are not required at all. It’s a great bow. Need I say more?
