Samick Archery is one of the best-known names in the sport. Founded in 1975, the brand has built a reputation for quality equipment. They are well known for making high quality bows for all levels. From beginner bows to high end competition bows. Recently, they have produced some of the best priced bows in the market. The Avante is one such bow.
It’s a little hard to classify the Samick Avante. Is it at the very top of the entry level category? Or is it the start of the intermediate level of bows? It does not look like an entry level bow at all. Heck it looks more premium than many intermediate models. It even has some features present in Samick’s top of the line bows.
The Avante is a 25 inch cast aluminum ILF riser. As with all ILF risers, it has bolts that allow users to adjust its tiller and poundage. It also has a unique variation to the standard limb alignment system. It has the same system that is present in Samick’s top of the line bows like the Ultra X and Max. Like many bows in its class, it uses opposing set screws the push a central block the holds the limbs. Unlike most entry and mid-level bows however, the Avante’s limb alignment system has a more complex locking system that guarantees they stay aligned once set. Other standard ILF features include top, mid and bottom stabilizer mounts. Sight mounts, clicker mount and extended clicker plate. It also has 2 standard Berger holes.
The Samick Avante is one premium looking bow. The paint finish is flawless. I specially love the red variants. To the untrained eye, the Avante looks just like the Win and Win Inno CXT. Something that distinguishes it from the Inno however is how thin the bow is. Paper thin by modern recurve bow standards. A huge plus on the bow is the black hardware including the clicker plate extension and tiller bolts. Like I always say, black hardware elevates the bow. They turn the cool factor up all the way to 11.
It may look premium but the Avante does not shoot like a high-end bow. Don’t get me wrong, it is a nice bow to shoot. Fun even, but it is clear it has limitations. The riser has a low to medium height plastic grip. Like many modern recurve grips, it promotes the correct hand position. The riser feels light with the typical tendency of the top limb to fall back when shot without stabilizers. The super thin profile makes for a very nice sight window. The riser feels stiff, to a point. When using limbs that are over 40 pounds, I actually felt the riser give a little. Kinda expected for bows at this price range. The riser felt happiest when using 32-pound limbs. Shots felt snappy and quick. Not aggressive though. The feel of the shot to me is the clearest sign that this is not a high-end bow. But it sure feels close. The narrow profile also makes wearing an arm guard kinda mandatory. Feedback is really muted and light. Not as clear as the feedback you would get from CNC machined risers.
Who is the Avante for? I think this is a perfect bow for grade school kids and high schoolers who need a bow they can grow in to and then compete with. It’s also an awesome bow for intermediate shooters and hobby shooters who want something more than just the basic recurve. This is a bow that you can grow with from being a beginner to right before you shoot at high levels. Really high levels. This is the perfect entry level bow if you want a taste of high-end gear.
The Samick Avante is a stunning bow up close. On the shooting line, it will have trouble turning heads. It’s not that it does look good. Like I said, it’s stunning. It looks like a million bucks. But it looks so much like the Inno CXT that it will be hard to tell it from the dozens of Innos on the line.
The Avante is known for being a good intermediate riser. I think it’s an even better entry level bow. It doesn’t have any flaws really. Just limitations. It is the entry level bow that gives beginners and intermediate shoots a view of the top without the top level price tag.
